April 7th, 2011tubing the Tongariro

Must do.

In February we tubed down the Tongariro River. Dale and I rate it near the top of funnest things ever.

April 14th, 2009kayak fishing

kayak-fish-1

Late this arvo, we headed out into the Pacific Ocean. I thought we’d been told where to go for Snapper, but we didn’t see any of those. Was lovely out there watching the sun set over the  land. The Kahawai was a great fight and pulled my kayak all over the place.

The surf was very small, but it’s still exciting paddling back through it in the dark. It’s difficult to tell how big the waves behind you are. I went at it and got a good ride in.

Zac was following me in, but he decided to do a much more difficult maneuver, with a level five difficulty rating. ;)

He rode a wave in, and eventually slid off the back. Next he turned sideways onto the waves (I yell straighten up from the beach –  I was worried he might lose his fish if he rolled) (he tells me afterwards, he was grabbing his fishing rod as it fell off). As the next wave gets to him, he turns right round, and reverses toward the beach. For the final flourish he once again turns and rides the surge of the wave up the beach sideways.

Very impressive technique, but I wouldn’t have tried it in the dark with a fish on board. :P

March 28th, 200929 snapper

29-snapper-1

On Friday morning we caught 29 snapper. (Only 3 the day before.) After I caught my limit of 9, I passed my rod to Joe a couple of times when I hooked up. Our policy is to only keep them over 300mm long, so in the end there was $280 worth of fillets.

March 23rd, 2009Joe fishes

joe-fish-1

Joe with his Trevally and a shark. He (and Dad) went out the entrance with Dave MacLean on Saturday.

Yesterday we went down to Pilot Bay and sailed throught the port area. The the rest of the team brought lunch down to the bay.

The tide and wind were favourable, so the others sailed the boat home and I picked them up from Te Puna.

January 1st, 2009new year’s day

new year's day

We hadn’t sailed since last year… oh, wait, since yesterday.

Oh well, we went sailing again today. Sailed to a private beach on an island for lunch. (The Thornes paddled there on their kayaks, and with someone else’s… maybe I shouldn’t say that bit.)

We thought the day was alright.

Happy New Year!

me in Whitianga

That’s how my Thursday ended. It started at 5am when we got up to go fishing, and tracked our way out the bay to “Spot X” for one snapper. It was a beautiful day.

Here’s some more pics from the rest of the day…

December 4th, 2008fishing myths

There are a lot of misconceptions about fishing. I’d like to clear a few of them up.

Fishing is horrible.

I’m sick and tired of hearing fishing talked about like it’s a holiday. It’s miserable.

In fact back in the middle ages, fishing was actually used as a punishment. (Mostly for taking husbands window shopping and keeping them waiting in the horse and carriage.)

Anyway, I thought I should show you some photos, so you understand what us three guys have to suffer through as we fulfill our fishing trip obligations this week

island picnic

Through a set of circumstances (that were entirely unforeseen at breakfast time) we were sailing to Motuhoa Island for dinner on Friday night.

We had a great sail in ten 10-15kts of breeze.

first sail

Here we are motoring out of the Te Puna estuary into the harbour on Saturday arvo. There’s a howling head wind coming towards us. We look really intrepid, and ready for anything. And anything was exactly what we got.
